Background of the study
Community participation is vital for the success of public health programs, and adult literacy is a critical factor in empowering communities to engage effectively in health initiatives. In Bida Local Government Area, Niger State, adult literacy programs have been designed to enhance the ability of community members to understand, access, and participate in health programs. These initiatives focus on improving reading, writing, and comprehension skills, which in turn enable individuals to better understand health-related information and make informed decisions about their well-being (Ahmed, 2023). The integration of literacy education with health awareness campaigns has created a synergistic effect that not only improves individual health outcomes but also strengthens community participation in broader health initiatives. By fostering a culture of learning and empowerment, these programs aim to bridge the gap between health information dissemination and practical health outcomes. Collaborative efforts between local health authorities, educational institutions, and community organizations have played a crucial role in ensuring that the curriculum is relevant and accessible. As the community faces challenges such as low health literacy and limited access to quality healthcare, the role of adult literacy in enhancing community participation has become increasingly important. The study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these literacy programs in improving community engagement in health programs and to identify best practices that can be replicated in similar settings (Bello, 2024).
Statement of the problem
In Bida Local Government Area, despite the implementation of adult literacy programs aimed at enhancing community participation in health initiatives, significant challenges remain. Many community members still exhibit low levels of health literacy, which undermines their ability to engage effectively in health programs and adopt recommended health behaviors. This issue is compounded by the limited reach of literacy programs and the inadequate tailoring of educational materials to the specific health needs of the community. Additionally, the absence of a structured evaluation system makes it difficult to determine the long-term impact of these programs on community health outcomes (Adamu, 2023). The gap between the intended benefits of increased literacy and the actual level of community engagement in health programs continues to pose a serious public health challenge. The study aims to investigate the factors contributing to this gap, including resource constraints, cultural barriers, and the quality of program implementation. By addressing these issues, the research intends to propose effective strategies for enhancing community participation in health initiatives through improved literacy. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and health practitioners, ensuring that adult literacy programs are better aligned with public health goals (Ibrahim, 2024).
